The AI Shift
How We Handle What Goes Wrong

AI builds fast. That makes the gap between a mistake and a running system smaller than it's ever been.

There's a version of AI-assisted development that feels like magic. You describe what you want, something gets built, and it mostly works. Teams move faster, prototypes appear overnight, and the gap between idea and implementation shrinks in a way that felt impossible a few years ago.

The gap that doesn't shrink is the one between "mostly works" and "safe to run your business on."

Every system has failure modes. The question isn't whether something will go wrong, it's whether you designed for it. In human-led development, that design happened through experience, code review, and uncomfortable questions in planning meetings. Someone who'd seen a data migration go sideways before would slow things down and ask what happens if this fails halfway through.

AI doesn't have that scar tissue.

It will build what you asked for. It will handle the cases you described. The edge cases you didn't think to mention, the failures that reveal themselves only under real conditions, the situations where two valid rules conflict, those get defaults. And the defaults are generic.

This isn't a reason to slow down. It's a reason to be deliberate about one specific thing: error states.

Before you build, it's worth asking what happens when this breaks. Not if. When. What does the user see? What does the system preserve? What can never be left in an inconsistent state?

Teams that answer those questions before they build don't spend less time on errors. They spend that time in a planning document instead of a production incident.

The speed AI offers is real. It's most valuable when the thinking it replaces was shallow to begin with. The thinking worth keeping is the kind that only comes from knowing your business and what it can't afford to get wrong.
